We interviewed Jonathan P. Gertler, Co-Founder, Managing Partner & CEO of BBLSA, to find out more about their work in Boston and what they look forward to with their new membership.
Hi Jonathan - welcome to SACC-NE. Please introduce yourself, Back Bay Life Science Advisors, and your work in Boston.
Thank you, on behalf of our entire Back Bay Life Science Advisors team I can say we are delighted to be a part of this wonderful organization. Prior to starting Back Bay 12 years ago with my partners, I spent many years in academia working as a vascular surgeon, but I’ve been involved with life science and medtech companies at all stages serving as a venture partner, an entrepreneur, an investor, and as the CEO and Managing Partner of Back Bay.
As for Back Bay, we are a boutique consultancy with a global reach based here in Boston’s Back Bay with an integrated focus on both our advisory and transactional expertise paired with investment banking guidance and execution. It’s really an interesting mix. Our work is in advancing biopharma and medtech development on an international level. We have offices here in Boston and also in the MaRS Discovery District in Toronto and we work with companies of all sizes around the globe. We’ve built a strong track-record recognition in
Northern Europe, and I’d say we truly specialize in US-EU life science partnerships with an emphasis on the Nordic region.
How would you describe your company culture?
We have an outstanding team here and I am incredibly proud to work with each one of them. Everyone brings a critical perspective through many years of experience and expertise in clinical, commercial, research, advisory, operational, or transactional roles.
Part of our values approach is that we nurture the quiet creative thinkers and the highly accomplished, big talkers equally at our firm. No one disappears into the woodwork at Back Bay because we respect diversity of
thought and perspective. At the end of the day the work we do is really rooted in taking care of one another--life science development at its core is all about supporting human health--and the same is true in our offices and among our team.
What is the best part of being a Back Bay Life Science Advisors employee?
The ethos at Back Bay has always been about how we nurture our clients and our teammates with equal dedication. We care deeply about the companies and technologies that we advise, and equally so, care about the well-being of our team. We constantly strive to hire smart and kind people and foster a thriving work culture. We were extremely proud this year to be named as one Vault’s Best Boutique Consulting Firms.
Why did you join SACC-NE and what are you looking forward to as a member?
This was a natural connection to make. We’re looking forward to getting to know our other neighbors here who are as passionate as we are about building bridges between Sweden and the US.
Share some exciting news about Back Bay Life Science Advisors.
Our projects and deals are always exciting to us. We average 75-80 projects a year and at any one time are working on 10-12 deals at various stages. One of our most recent transactions is the Caldrius deal with Cend Therapeutics to create Lisata. That truly showed the continuity of our integrated strategy consulting and transactional work as we were side by side with our client Caladrius from initial search through to the final deal execution.
We also recently wrapped up an exciting new video episode for our industry podcast, The Life Science Report, with Nasdaq Nordics about some of the new strategic changes happening in the Stockholm Exchange, and that was a pleasure to talk through the new initiative the head of Nasdaq’s Nordic Listings and discuss best practices for companies to consider before going public.
Back Bay Life Science Advisors continues to be involved in conferences expressly tied to Nordic-US collaboration, including, NLS Days in Malmo later this month—where you can find us at the US Pavilion—and Nordic American Life Science Conference in early December. One final note, and very important for Back Bay this year, after many years of collaborating and supporting Nordic conferences, we are so very proud to host our own on October 26 called the Nordic Growth Summit in Copenhagen. We’re welcoming many companies and investors from Sweden, Denmark, Norway, Finland, Iceland and the US for a day of discussion and ideas.
We’re truly wearing our Nordic hats proudly this fall.
