We interviewed Lovisa Afzelius, Origination Partner at Flagship Pioneering, to find out more about Flagship Pioneering and what they look forward to with their new membership.
How would you describe your company culture?
Flagship’s culture is exceedingly unique because of the thousands of bright and bold pioneering scientists, company builders, and professionals that make up our ecosystem. The company believes that pioneering is best done by teams, so we have a deep-seated culture of collaboration and iteration where diversity and debate are highly encouraged. Ultimately, the culture is designed to foster entrepreneurial scientists who can envision and create alternative futures.
What is the best part of being an employee at FLAGSHIP PIONEERING?
The best part about being an employee at Flagship is being surrounded by diverse, exceptionally talented professionals who are collectively seeking to change the world by addressing some of humanity’s most urgent challenges. I appreciate working with colleagues who are not searching for incremental improvements, but rather giant leaps in human health and sustainability.
Where do you see FLAGSHIP PIONEERING in 5 years?
In 5 years, I expect Flagship to be continuing to push the boundaries of what we thought was possible by creating first-of-their-kind businesses. This is made possible by its precisely honed company origination process that starts with seemingly unreasonable propositions and navigates to transformational outcomes.
Why did you join SACC-NE and what are you looking forward to as a member?
Having co-founded Elsa Science, a Swedish company providing educational and motivational support to improve self-management for patients living with chronic rheumatic diseases, I have seen how passionate the Swedish business community can be. Flagship is excited to be a SACC-NE member and we look forward to being a part of the talented community it fosters.
Share some exciting news about FLAGSHIP PIONEERING!
2023 has already been a big year both for Flagship Pioneering, which was named one of Fast Company’s Most Innovative Companies for the second year in a row, as well as for our founded companies. Already in 2023, we have launched two companies, including Ampersand Biomedicines and one of the companies I co-founded, Metaphore Biotechnologies. Also, many Flagship-founded companies had important milestones. Of note, Seres Therapeutics saw the FDA approval of the first orally administered microbiota-based therapeutic to prevent recurrence of C. difficile infection (CDI) in adults following antibacterial treatment for recurrent CDI.
